SHS Students Share their Love of Literacy with Lorane Kindergarteners

Kindergarteners at Lorane had some very special visitors yesterday! Students from Mrs. Trisha Master’s and Mrs. Anne Thomas’ Parenting & Child Development classes at SHS spent the morning reading stories and leading hands-on activities with our youngest Eagles.
High school students brought along some of their own childhood favorites—like "If You Give a Mouse a Cookie" and "Curious George"—and paired up with kindergarteners to read together. Afterward, each SHS student led a learning activity they designed to match the book, including puzzles, coloring pages, “I Spy” games, handmade puppets or small themed crafts.
Mrs. Thomas shared that while some high schoolers were nervous at first, they quickly lit up once they saw how excited the kindergarteners were to meet them. “These kids are going to be your new best friend,” she told them—and judging from the smiles and energy in the classrooms, she was absolutely right.
The visit, which Mrs. Thomas and Mrs. Master began several years ago, is part of the Parenting & Child Development curriculum. The course focuses on childhood development and teaches students—many of whom plan to become educators, nurses, or work with young children professionally following graduation—the importance of reading, engaging and interacting with young learners. This specific lesson gives them a chance to put those skills into action while providing a wonderful opportunity for students of both ages to enjoy their shared joy of reading, connection and creativity!
